Digipacks
1. Oasis- Dig Out Your Soul
1. Oasis- Dig Out Your Soul
Front Cover
Image
An abstract collage is used including a variety of different images such as a waterfall, an apple, mountains, clouds etc. These images are all related to the theme of nature and freedom. Their used to create an exciting, unique album cover. By using these images it provides an insight to the 'indie' lifestyle. Indie music products are predominantly set outside, which is used to represent the amount of freedom the band members hold- they tend to act how they wish with little thought about society. It also connotes how adventurous and exciting their lifestyle is. Bright ,earthly colours are also used which add to the theme of nature that is noticable throughout the digipack. Bands from the Indie genre are usually associated with nature and being unique. Therefore, by using abstract images and waterfalls etc. the front cover of the digipack represents the indie genre. Overall, the front cover is very eye-catching and chaotic which would appeal to Oasis' target audience. It also creates enigma- due to the excitement of the front cover, it makes the audience long to hear the tracks on the album.
Copy
The title of the album cover appears to be held in a persons hand. It states- dig out your soul. The hands appears to represent the unraveling of the soul (relating to the album title) and an explosion is shown just above the hands, connoting the emotions of release and freedom once the 'soul' has been dug out. The text is centered in the middle of the front cover, making it stand out in contrast to the images used in the background. Additionally, the hands are the main focus of the cover, placing the text in the middle of them helps to make the text more noticeable for the audience. The title text is in white, which is used for two reasons. Firstly, the colour white helps the title to stand out from the rest of the colours used. Secondly, the colour white connotes purity which could be related to the unraveling of the soul.
Genre
The indie/pop genre is represented through the abstract, fun exciting unique images which represent what the genre is all about. Many indie artists seek to be exposed as different- something new and exciting to reach a younger audience. The bright colours are also a tool in representing the lively, upbeat tone of indie music. The Earthly colours also represent the freedom associated with the particular genre.
Connotation
The use of the different images connotes a sense of adventure and excitement. The album cover seems very different to oasis' other album covers which connotes that something new and different will be included in the album. The different images of nature connote a sense of purity which may be something to do with the title- 'dig out your soul'. Overall, the album cover connotes freedom, nature, purity and contentment.
Target Audience
The album cover leaves the target audience fairly open due to the diversity of images. However, it would mainly be targeting a younger audience due to the new, fresh images that relate to having fun and being free. The whole of the digipack includes bright colours and intriguing, childlike fonts which again emphasise the album targeting a younger audience.
Tag line/ Title/ Name
The title is included in the hands featured in the centre of the cover whilst the name of the band is positioned in the left hand corner. The title stands out due to it being positioned in the middle of the cover, the white font used and also because the hands are the main feature of the cover. The font used for the text is quite scruffy and looks similar to someone's handwriting. This is used to emphasize that they are artists and constantly working on their music.
Representation
The front cover represents the album as holding new, exciting music that has the ability to change people's outlook on life. Due to the title 'Dig out your soul', the album is represented as challenging its audience and persuading them to be themselves and express themselves. Through this, the audience are able to feel a part of the album,it makes them feel like the album was specifically tailored to suit their needs. Furthermore, they then recognize that the album may have an effect on them. Therefore, this would persuade them to purchase the album.
Inside Front
Image
Most of the images on the inside front of the album could be left to interpretation due to the pictures being fairly abstract. The theme of clouds is also run through from the front cover. However, on this particular side a ship is seen almost floating through the sky trying to break free- the ship has various objects on it which are fairly hard to recognize and are open to interpretation. Therefore, the images included make the person viewing the package more engaged and interested.
Copy
The inside cover does not contain any text, all of the attention is focused on the different images appearing on the cover. Not including any text helps the audience to focus solely on the images included, helping them to take in the images and ponder upon the meaning they encode for the album. Also, this is conventional from the indie genre, the 'Inside Front' and 'Inside Back' covers usually do not tend to include text. They tend to either feature a blank page or in this case, an image/ several images. Overall, there is little text included on digi-packs in order to keep it fairly simple and create a sense of the unknown. Indie bands are constantly creating pieces open for interpretation and therefore the purpose of their digipacks is to create something different which will engage their audience.
Genre
Again, the specific genre of the album is represented through the diversity of images almost pushed together. The images are left open to interpretation and represent the indie genre as they are fairly unpredictable. Similarly, the bright colours are again used to represent the colourful lifestyle of indie bands. The background includes a blue sky and clouds, representing the theme of nature which is common in products from this genre. Finally, the fact that the boat is 'breaking free' fits in with the amount of freedom that is associated with the indie lifestyle.
Connotation
The boat seems to be breaking free through the clouds which connotes a sense of freedom. This particular aspect fits in with the title of the album- 'Dig out your soul'. Also, the way in which the boat is flying also connotes freedom and true happiness. Additionally, the way in which the boat is carrying objects gives the audience an idea of a new beginning- everything is being taken away and transported somewhere new. The collection of these images has been cleverly utilized in order to create a connotation of fresh starts and freedom which seems to fit in with the themes presented throughout the digi-pack.

Representation
The Inside front represents a sense of breaking free and being yourself. This is due to the boat breaking through the clouds. This has been cleverly used as it relates to the title of the album- 'Dig out your soul'. The album is represented as holding something new and exciting and as a whole, the inside front adds to this representation.

Inside Back
Image
The inside back features two butterflies. One of the butterflies is almost carrying a large circle with a downwards arrow positioned in the middle. Again, bright colours have been used and the cloud theme is carried through. Gravestones are also positioned to the left of the picture. Similarly to the front cover, contrasting images have been used to elaborate on the wild, funky lifestyle of indie band members.
Genre
Again, the specific genre of the album is represented through the diversity of images almost pushed together. The images are left open to interpretation and represent the indie genre as they are fairly unpredictable. Similarly, the bright colours are again used to represent the colourful lifestyle of indie bands. Each cover features the same background, creating a sense of continuity and again reinforcing the the theme of nature embedded into indie products.

Connotation
The butterflies connote a sense of nature and freedom as they are able to fly and do what they please in the world around them. They are also the main features, therefore, have the most control. The gravestones to the left of the picture connote a sense of appreciating life which again ties in with the title of digging out your soul ,being yourself and enjoying life.

Representation
The Front back highlights the contrast between the butterflies freedom and the gravestones. It represents that life is wonderful, and that the world around us is ours to appreciate and enjoy. By including the gravestones it represents that we only live once and that we should enjoy it through listening to their music. The contrast reinforces the fast pace of the world around us, and how quickly life lies by.

Back Cover
Image
Clouds and butterflies are again used. Also, two soldiers are featured, one has a flag in his hand. To the left hand side of the album, gravestones are positioned in the form of crosses. Using soldiers and the gravestone again introduces the theme of death and the preciousness of life also.
Copy
The Back cover features the names of the seperate songs in different sized fonts. This again, adds to the randomness of the album in general. The font is also fairly rough and looks hand-written. This adds to the idea of oasis being artists. The names are printed in white in order to stand out against the colourful background. Also, the website for oasis is featured in fairly small font and the record label is also featured. Typical conventions such as barcode etc. are also included.
Connotation
The soldiers are used to connote pride and successfulness which may be connoted with the bands pride of the overall success of their album. The gravestones again are used as a recognition that life is sacred and that the band want their audiences to appreciate the music and enjoy it. It also connotes that they want the music to have an effect on them personally.

Representation
The soldiers on the back cover represent a sense of pride and appreciation. This is used in contrast with the gravestones to show the sacrifices that have been made previously by soldiers. The whole digipack emphasises the importance of the environment and appreciating life. It represents the world as a wonderful place for us to enjoy and roam free.

2. The Pigeon Detectives- Wait For Me
Front Cover
Image
The front cover has a white background which is used in order for the image and text to stand out. Two reindeers appear on the front, one is slightly larger than the other. They seem to be showing affection to one another which ties in with the title- 'Wait For Me'. The reindeers are almost intertwined by their antlers demonstraying a relationship between them. A sense of ambiguity is created as the audience are unable to see the actual band.
Copy
The text is positioned in the left top corner. A fairly plain font is used- Century Gothic. The name of the band and the title of the album are set out one line apart. The name of the band is in a black font, and the name of the album is in a red one. These colours are used to stand out against the white background. They also coincide with the red/black colours that feature on the reindeers.
Genre
This front cover goes against the typical conventions of an indie rock cover. It is rather unusual- normally from other genres the cd cover would feature the artist on the front rather than a different image. The use of animals creates a unique feel to album- this represents the indie/rock genre of the band. Additionally, the use of black and red colours relates to the quirky nature of rock music.
Connotation
The front cover connotes a sense of love and trust which ties in with the title of the album. The two reindeers obviously have some kind of a relationship which is shown through the affection shown on the front of the digipack. The reindeers seem unable to look at each other which along with the title connotes that they are having to seperate from each other which is causing them to be fairly upset. Overall, the audience can assume that the album is going to include tracks related to relationships and seperation. It also connotes that the band produce fairly deep, thoughtful music that their audience will be able to relate too.
Target Audience
The front cover leaves the album open to a wide target audience. There is not a specific picture of the band to address the age range. The title 'Pigeon Detectives' however makes the band seem fairly unique and different- this may not appeal to an older audience as it's not neccessarily what they are used to. Therefore, i would suggest the album is created for a younger audience.
Tag line/title/name
The title of the album and the name of the band are positioned in the top corner of the album cover. Due to it being set on a white background, colours such as black and red have been used to help it stand out and match with both the image and inside front, back and back cover of the digiback. The title is quite plain, which suggests that this front covers main feature is the reindeers- this is what the band want their audience to focus on.

The title is quite plain, which suggests that this front covers main feature is the reindeers- this is what the band want their audience to focus on.
Representation
The reindeers on the front cover represent a close bond which ties in with the title of the album. The name of the album and the images of the reindeers work together in order to create a representation of the band relating to their audience and creating an album that not only includes relatable topics, but holds something new and exciting.
Inside Front
Image
In contrast to the white background used for the front cover, a black background is used with a red outline of the reindeers face. The colours have also been continued from the front cover. It is very simple and the outline of the reindeer takes up the majority of the cover. From this, it is recognisable that reindeers are a common theme on the digipack as a whole creating a sense of continuity. Aditionally, it also creates an identity for the band- the audience will instantly associate the band with the reindeers featured throughout the digipack.
Genre
This inside front is also rather unusual, for a viewer, it takes a while to understand what the picture actually is. This again, creates an unusual aspect of the cd cover which is used to represent the indie-rock genre. Additionally through using an animal again relates to the adventurous lifestyle associated with indie rock band members. They are also associated with nature which is represented again by the reindeers that are featured on the digipack.
Tagline/ Title/ Name
There is no tag line/title/name on the inside front of the digiback- just the outline of the reindeer. Overall, the digiback seems to reduce the amount of text -maybe in order to create a sense of enigma? The band is fairly new- therefore audiences may be interested to find out who they are and therefore listen to their songs. It seems that the band want the attention to be focused on images rather than text.
Representation
The colours red and black seem to connote a sense of danger- this is used effectively with the outline of the reindeer as the audience are unable to initially notice what the outline is actually of. This creates a sense of mystery around the band. This mystery is built up also due to a picture of the band not being provided. The band are represented as fairly exciting due to this, making the audience more likely to want to listen to the album and gain a sense of their personalities.
Inside Back
Image
Similarly, a black background is again used, with a red outline of the reindeers face. However, this specific outline is from a different angle of the reindeer. The outline in this picture is of the opposite reindeer to the one used in the inside front. The reindeer is in the same position as featured on the front cover, creating a sense of continuity again. By doing this, it makes the audience even more aware that the digipack is focused on a relationship between the two animals creating a glimmer of information about what the album will contain.
Genre
The inside front and inside back are very much the same apart from the view of the seperate reindeers - the reindeers bring about a sense of peace and happiness. These feelings are usually associated with the indie/ rock genre. The colours continued throughout the digipack also relate to the genre- the rock subgenre of indie music is usually connoted with dark colours.

Representation
The inside back is very similar to the inside front picture. Again, this represents a sense of danger and mystery around the band. There is not much to comment on as the outline of the reindeer is the only thing that is featured. This could represent the band as being fairly plain and simple -by not 'dressing up' their digipack indicates that the band want their audience to focus purely on their music rather than the design of their album.
Back Cover
Image
The theme of reindeers again is held through to the back of the digipack, the outline is similiar to the one used previously in the inside front and back. This outline however has been utlised to hold the list of the track names inside in white text- the reindeer is almost protecting the text and holding it all together.
Copy
The names of the different tracks on the album are positioned on the left hand side of the album with the track number positioned before the name of the track. The text is in white in order to stand out against a black background. Also, the same font has been used from the front cover, again creating a sense of continuity and making the album look professional

The Back Cover is again similiar to the other covers of the digiback. It represents the genre of the band through the contrasting colours used which highlight danger and excitement. By using the same image to finish the digipack, emphasises the whole idea of including reindeers to represent the band as being adventurous and different.

Representation
Again, the back cover of the album is kept fairly simple and follows the same pattern of the inside front and inside back. The same colours and images have been used representing the band as consistent in their approach to music and their career.

3. The Verve- Urban Hymns
Front Cover
Image
An image is included of the band all together. Typical "indie" stereotypes have been reinforced due to costume etc. They are wearing fairly plain outfits and appear as quite 'scruffy'. They also all have quite long, unbrushed hair. These features are what we would normally associate indie band members as having. It creates a identity for the band and allows the audience to recognize them as an "indie" band. Additionally their relaxed body language idicates that they are comfortable around one another which is a typical convention of indie band members. The band are featured outside, lying down comfortably on a patch of grass, with trees and hills viewable in the background.
Copy
The text is used containing the name of the band in bold, and the title of the album in a different font underneath. The contrast of fonts make the digipack more 'scruffy' and 'different' which is associated with the nature of the band. The fact that the texts are different also makes the digipack cover stand out from others that have been produced from this genre.

Genre
The "indie/rock" genre is reinforced through the use of characters and costume on the front cover. It features the actual band- which is a prodominant feature found in digipacks from this specific genre. The fact that the band are outside also fits in with the genre of the band- indie band members are often seen as adventurous characters- they tend to be seen outside to represent this side of them.

The fact that the band are outside also fits in with the genre of the band- indie band members are often seen as adventurous characters- they tend to be seen outside to represent this side of them.
Connotation
The group are positioned outdoors. Similiarly to music videos from this genre, the outdoors is used as it connotes a sense of freedom and adventure- this is typically associated with the "indie/rock" genre. The costume and body language of the band connote a sense of belonging to a certain group- they are all wearing similar attire and are relaxed in each others company. Overall, the front of the digi-pack connotes the band as being very close and holding typical conventions of an indie band.
Target Audience
The whole digiback reflects that the album is not neccesarily for a young audience. Despite the adventure associated with the images, the characters seen from the band are not specifically very young which reflects that the target audience may tend to be slightly older. In conclusion, i would suggest the target audience to be younger adults/ adults with an interest in the "indie/rock" genre.
Tagline/ Title/ Name
The title of the band and the album is positioned in the top left hand cover of the album cover in black text. By keeping it fairly plain and simple, the main focus is placed on the image of the band allowing the audience to get to know them.

Representation
The band are represented as very adventurous due to their surroundings in the front cover. Their strong relationship is also represented through their positions on the front cover- it is noticeable that they are all sitting fairly close together. Overall, the use of costumes, body language, setting and text creates a representation of a typical indie rock band.
Inside Front
Image
This Image is similar to the front cover, it includes the same setting and characters, however, this time a dog is included. Also in contrast to the previous image, all of the band members faces are visible and their facial expressions have changed. They are shown smiling and enjoying their time with each other. This is used to create a band identity also, making the different characters recognizable to the audience.
Copy
There is no text included on this particular side, suggesting that the band want the audience to pay close attention to the image included. This could be so that the band become more recognizable. Furthermore, this makes the audience more able to relate to the band and be aware of their personalities creating an interest in their album.
Genre
The indie rock genre is represented on the 'inside front' in a similar way as the 'front cover'. The use of an outdoor setting, the costumes, the characters and the laid back body language all help to present the indie genre. On the inside front however, the facial expressions have changed- the band members are seen enjoying each others company and smiling. This is used to show the exciting lifestyles of indie band members and the close connection that they form with each other. Additionally, a dog is used to reinforce how indie bands are often at one with nature.
Connotation
The audience can gather various connotations from this image. Similarly to the front cover, the use of an outdoor image connotes freedom. Also, the use of a bull dog connotes a sense of danger which adds to the bands adventurous side. The facial expressions are used to connote that they overall enjoy spending time with each other and are having fun performing and creating music. For an audience, this creates an impression of their music being fairly upbeat and quirky.

Representation
Again, the use of positions and facial expressions help to represent the band as having a very close relationship and being supportive of one another. Due to the many conventions used on this particular side of the digi-pack, the band are overall represented as typical 'indie band members' -they seem to be enjoying life in each others company.

Inside Back
Image
There is no image featured on this side of the digi-pack. A Plain black cover is used on its own- without any text.
Genre
This particular side on the album is plain black- which does not really have much effect on the representation of the genre. The only thing that could be recognized, is that the colour black is usually associated with the indie rock genre.

Connotation
Plain black is used to connote a sense of ambiguity- it leaves the audience wanting to know a bit more about 'The Verve'. It also suggests that the band want the audience to focus purely on the images featured on the front cover and the inside front to gain information about their personalities.

The back cover is plain black apart from the small image of the band on the right hand side in the center and the text including the names of the songs on the left hand side.
Copy
Text is used with the names of the songs featuring on the album and the details of the album anchoring the small image of the band. A plain, white font is used which fits in with the plain nature of the digi-pack overall.
Genre
A small image of the band is used again to reinforce the genre of the album, and plain black and white colours that are associated with the genre are used. Overall, the back cover is fairly plain which is used to reinforce the laid back nature of the band.
4. Florence and The Machine- Lungs
Front Cover
Image
Includes a supernatural image of the main band member- florence with what appears as lungs appearing on the outside of her body which corresponds to the title of the actual album. She is wearing a string like top so that the lungs are visible to the audience and stand out in contrast to the natural background. The background features a patterned curtain with images of flowers and birds placed around Florence, making her the centre-piece. She is seen as fairly relaxed and is not facing the camera, rather looking down, with her eyes shut. She is shown in the centre of the advert to draw the attention to her. As she becoming a recognized and iconic face within the indie scene, the target audience will see where this advert has been placed and automatically recognize her due to her taking up most of the frame.

The title of the band is at the top of the cover, in a hand-written font. The writing is fairly intertwined adding to the relaxed nature of the front cover and relating to the connection between Florence and nature. The name of the album however is in a different font and larger size at the bottom of the cover. 'Lungs' is placed overlaying the image of the lungs in capitals, reinforcing the theme of breathing and feeling free. By placing the title 'lungs' in a larger, bolder font it makes this theme more obvious to the audience. It also makes the lungs the focal point of the album cover. Also, the text has been placed in white connoting a sense of purity, freedom and peace, which is used alongside the rest of the digipack to provide a graceful feel to the album.
Genre
The image of Florence outdoors reinforces the wild lifestyle of bands from this genre. Also the sense of freedom is a reccuring aspect in bands from this genre. The album cover is also fairly unusual as it features a set of lungs, alongside contrasting images of flowers and birds. This overall adds to the idea of Florence being at one with nature. The fact that she doesn't appear as having much make up on also makes her seem fairly natural with the environment she is placed in.

The album cover represents Florence as being fairly adventurous, quirky and individual. Her individualism is added to by the fact that the indie genre does not necessarily feature many female solo singers. Florence is something different and exciting, the front cover connotes that her album is going to hold new sounds and tones that an audience has never necessarily heard before which adds to the whole appeal of the album. An enigma is created around Florence's character and also around what the album is going to be like.
Target Audience
The image of a woman on the front contrasts with other indie albums and allows the album to be targeted at a wider audience. Overall, i would say that the album is targeted for young adults/ adults with a passion for indie/pop music.
Tagline/ Title/ Name
The title of the band is positioned at the top of the album cover and the title of the album is positioned at the bottom. White text is used due to the variety of colours used in the image on the front. A more friendly text is used for the name of the band in comparison to quite a formal text used for the album title -Lungs. The formal text helps the word 'Lungs' to stand out from the background and emphasises the importance of this feature. The title of the album seems fairly unusual however it is obviously of importance due to lungs being featured on Florence. It could be that lungs have been shown as they are of great importance to florence as without them, she would be unable to sing.
Representation
Through the use of the flowers, birds, branches etc. the band has been represented as being at one with nature and feeling free and unique. This aspect is also heightened through the use of lungs featured on the front cover-lungs are used in order for people to breath. Therefore, including them creates a sense of release and 'letting go'. Additionally, a sense of femininity is also represented. A large image of Florence is featured at the front, alongside images of pink flowers and birds.
Inside Front
Image
An image of Florence with her fans is used. It builds a connection between the band and their fans. The image of the fans and Florence is used in order to show the connection between the two groups- usually indie/pop bands try to build a connection with their fans by making their whole appearance very realistic. Florence's face is not visible however the audience is able to notice her due to her costume and the fact that she is on top of the fans. The connection is heightened through the fans almost holding onto Florence- overall, it's very personal, which indicates that the band view their fans highly. There is also a strong light focused upon Florence, reflecting her importance in the indie scene. She is looked upon as an icon. There are also pictures being taken of her, again, reinforcing how important she is to people, and how memorable they want this moment to be.
Connotations
By including the fans on the digipack, it connotes that the band value their fans as an important aspect of their lives. Additionally, it connotes passion, as they are very passionate towards their fans also, this is shown through the way in which Florence is almost 'surrendering' herself to them. Even though the audience are unable to see facial expressions, a sense of happiness is made clear through the close bond they have and the connotations of being 'one' and being 'together'. Overall, this side of the digipack emphasizes the mutual love between the band and their fans, connotating a strong bond between them.
Representation
A connection with the band and fans is established which is used to represent the band as fairly down to earth and 'normal'. However, the fact that Florence is placed above her audience represents her fame and popularity. Additionally, we don't normally see women on indie products having power. On this particular side, Florence represents female dominance as she is above the audience and is being looked up too, the audience are longing for her attention.

Inside Back
Image
A black and white simple pattern is used on what seems to be material. Also, flowers and birds are seen across the left and right hand sides. The contrast between the two images reflects the genre of the album. This is the same image that is featured on the front cover behind Florence, creating a sense of continuity. This suggests that the album is for a more feminine audience.
Representation
The flowers, birds and pattern on the inside back represent femininity, relating to the lead singer of the band. Through this side, more of Florence's personality is presented to the audience and they are able to gain an insight as to what the music on the album might hold.
Back Cover
Image
An image of lungs is again used towards the top of the back cover in a white outline, once more relating to the title of the album. The image is fairly scientific, with specific sectors of the brain being outline and annotated. This relates very much to the indie audience. Stereotypically, the audience for indie bands are fairly upper class and well educated ,therefore this image would relate to them. The back cover is used in contrast with the other sides as it features a plain black background. The other sides feature real images of either Florence or a patterned background. By doing this, it draws the audiences attention to track list featured on the album. The bar code is also included on the back cover.
Copy
Numbers are used to label the different sections of the lungs in a white font. Additionally, white font is again used at the bottom of the cover in order to illustrate the different songs featured on the album. The colour white has been used throughout the digipack, connoting a sense of purity. It also helps the text to stand out against the variety of backgrounds. The font is quite antique which matches the 'retro' image created by the entire digipack.
Genre
Image of the lungs is fairly unique and not really seen on other albums. Also an outline of the lungs is used- this has been previously seen in albums. Outlines of images create a sense of ambiguity and seem to fit on well with a black background. These different images are used together to represent the unique indie rock genre. The black colour used on the background of the back cover represents rock music as
black is often connotated with rock music.
Connotation
The image of the lungs on the back connotes a sense of appreciation for humanity and the way in which humans are formed. It also connotes the importance of lungs for Florence. They are essential for her in order to flourish in her talent of singing.
Connotation

Representation
Image of lungs represents purity and also represents the band and their music as full of life.
Target Audience
The complex image of the lungs is related to males, as they are stereotypically more scientific and would be interested in the image shown.
5. The Killers- Sam's Town
Front Cover
Image
The image on the front cover is what appears to be the side of a trailer or house. It appears as fairly dirty and old. The front cover seems to be set in a different country due to the setting shown. It could be suggested that its set in America due to the lady featured on the right hand side wearing a beauty pageant sash. The lady appears as fairly confident, with relaxed body language. She is facing the camera and seems to stand out as she is wearing barely any clothing. There is also a goat that appears on the left hand side, facing away from the camera. The goat and the female are used on either side of the side of the title.
Copy
The title of the album 'The Killers' is centered in the middle of the front cover. A black, abstract font is used to make it stand out in contrast to the white, plain background. Additionally a swirly red font is used just below the album title, the only sign of colour across the digipack, suggesting that the title 'Sam's Town' is of importance. Red is also used as it connotes danger, suggesting that the place shown on the front cover could in fact be 'Sam's Town'.
Genre
The 'indie rock' genre is shown in various ways on the front cover. Firstly, a goat is used. From research into indie products, it is apparent that animals are used quite frequently. Secondly, the use of the undressed woman introduces the theme of women and sex. Sexual connotations are often associated with this genre as they are regularly mentioned in their lyrics along with images shown in their videos. Thirdly, the use of black and white colours is also a feature of indie products, they often use fairly plain colours to focus the attention upon the images that feature on the products. Finally, the front cover is set outside, this again is a convention used in the indie genre. They often set their products outside in order to show their free, adventurous spirit and how they live life to the full.
Connotation
The use of the barely clothed female, connotes sexual themes, an apparent theme in indie products. Also, the use of a dirty, old setting connotes that the band are fairly simplistic with their lifestyles, and enjoy the indie lifestyle. The black and white colours also add to this connotation, they are fairly plain, dark colours again representing the genre as a whole. The red is used to connote danger in Sam's Town which is heightened by the deserted atmosphere demonstrated on the front of the digipack.
Target Audience
It seems that 'The Killers' are aiming their products at males, this is due to the use of the undressed female. This image would typically appeal to a male audience. Despite this, a mixed audience are still able to enjoy the digipack due to the interesting contrast of images used to engage a large audience. It could be argued that women might find the image inspirational as the female appears confident connoting that she is 'running' Sam's town.
Mode of Address
The female is looking at the camera, suggesting that she is fairly confident in her position and seems fairly protective over the setting behind her.
Tag line/ Title / Name
The title of the album stands out due to the swirly red font, it seems to be quite a dated font, suggesting that 'Sam's Town' is an old place, which is reinforced by the background used.
Representation
Femininity is represented through the use of the confident, powerful female depicted and the use of the colour red. However, masculinity is also represented through the colours of black and white, and the female could be seen as an object for men rather than a representation of confidence for females. As a band, they have been represented as fairly down to earth and simplistic, due to the settings shown.
Inside Front
Image
The trailer is used again however a different side is used. An image of an elderly lady is shown in the window of the trailer, adding to the unique feel of the album. This image also creates an enigma as the audience are unaware as to who she is and what her importance is to the band. A deserted background is again shown with various plants shooting out of a deserted land. This continues the deserted theme initially shown on the front cover.
Copy
There is no copy shown on the inside front cover, this could in fact be so that the audiences attention is primarily focused on the image shown. Also, the indie digipacks we have looked at do not contain text on the inside front/ inside back.
Genre
The indie genre is demonstrated through the unique image shown on the inside front. Also, the use of the trailer is used in order to represent the stereotypical lifestyle of indie band members and how they are constantly on the road touring. The background of nature is also a common feature of indie products- they are viewed as being free and adventurous.
Connotation
The use of the abandoned land connotes a sense of freedom and tranquility. This, and the fact that the album is named 'Sams Town' connotes that the killers are trying to depict an empty town where there once used to be life. This overall connotes that the album may contain tracks relating to breaking free from society and also the occurrence of change. The image of the elderly woman in the trailer connotes a sense of diversity and uniqueness, which can be related to the bands overall image.
Target Audience
Overall, the Inside Front cover is fairly interesting and unique ,therefore would seem to engage a large audience. However, I would suggest a younger audience for this cover as the uniqueness and rebellion relates to their age range- rebellion is shown through the use of the elderly lady sticking her tongue out.
Mode of Address
The elderly lady in the caravan is facing the camera, which draws the audiences attention straight to her. She stands out in contrast to the background used.
Representation
The image is fairly unusual. It contains a deserted area placed with a trailer containing an elderly woman sticking her tongue out. This whole image represents the band as being fairly individual and unique- this image has never been seen before and obviously a great deal of thought has gone into it in order to make it this different. The usual representation of elderly women has been challenged, they are usually represented as fairly reserved characters. Therefore, the use of the woman sticking her tongue out creates a sense of the change in society apparent in 'Sams Town'. Suggesting there, that the social norms have altered. As a whole, this creates a representation of 'The Killers' not being afraid to go against social norms, and include quite controversial images in their products.
Image
The image of a goat is used again, following on from the Front Cover. However ,this time the side of a goats head is used instead. This creates a connection, suggesting that the goat is used for a purpose rather than just being a prop on the Front Cover. The goat may have been used to represent the theme of nature, or also may be of importance to the band as a whole, or may in fact be used as a 'mascot' for the band, creating their identity. By using the goat, they are making themselves recognizable to an audience.
Copy
Again, there is no copy shown on the inside front cover, this could again be used so that the audiences attention is primarily focused on the image. Also, the indie digipacks we have looked at do not contain text on the inside front/ inside back.
Genre
The uniqueness of the indie genre has again been shown through the image of the goat. It seems to have no relevance to the album title, a common convention used in indie rock products. They tend to use abstract images in order to create an enigma around the object. In this case, the goat has been utilized in order to engage the audience with the digipack- what is the significance of the goat?
Connotation
The image of the goat connotes a sense of nature and wildlife. This could be associated with the free, adventurous lifestyles that indie bands often lead.
Target Audience
The simple image of the goat leaves the target audience fairly open.
Mode of Address
The goat is not looking directly at the camera, however, is facing the opposite direction.
Representation
The image of the goat represents the band as being fairly unique which is a representation of the indie genre as a whole.
Image
For the first time, the band are shown on the cover of the digipack. They appear to fit the conventional image of indie bands. Wearing quite dark, simple clothing. They are also fairly scruffy with long hair, facial hair and sunglasses. This image creates an identity for the band, allowing the audience to recognize who they are in the future.
Copy
A fairly simple, white font is used in order to stand out against the black background. Red is also used to highlight the track number and other information included at the bottom of the cover. The colours red, black and white all relate to the indie genre, therefore including this has reinforced the bands identity. Additionally, these colours have been used throughout the digipack, creating a sense of continuity.
Genre
The Indie genre is shown in several ways on the back cover. Firstly, the band are shown fairly close together, some members are even touching each other. Indie band members are often represented as holding a close bond with each other which is reinforced on the back cover. They appear very relaxed in each others company, and the fact that they are positioned so closely reinforces the genre of the band. Secondly, their image also relates to the indie genre. Through costume, body language and facial expression the band have created an identity for themselves as an individual band, whilst conforming to the steretypical 'indie band' we would expect to see. Finally, the colours used on the back cover again relate to the genre. It mainly features black and white fonts and colours as these are the colours that have been used previously in products from this genre.
Target Audience
The back cover could be received by a number of audiences, it does not specifically represent a specific age range. However, due to the age of the band members it seems to appeal to a fairly young audience. Also, due to the genre of the band being made clear on this specific side, those who enjoy rock/indie music would be a key audience.
Mode of Address
Out of the four males, two of the males are facing the camera. Whilst the other two, who are in the middle, are either looking up or down.
Representation
The males appear as fairly confident and self-aware, representing masculinity. This is a common theme in indie bands, we do not tend to see many female members at all. The males have been represented as very powerful, this connotes that in fact, they may be the individuals running 'Sam's Town'. Additionally, the way in which they are so close together makes them identifiable as a 'unit' ,representing them as not only powerful as individuals, but as a group. This idea represents patriarchy within society, men are often viewed as a powerful collective holding the most control over the decisions made.
1. Florence and the Machine
Lungs
Image
The main Image on the advertisement poster is of Florence, the lead singer of the band. She is not actually facing the camera, but looking down, creating an element of ambiguity, essentially forming an enigma for the audience. Due to Florence and the Machine being a fairly new band at the time of the advertisement, the image of Florence generates an identity for the band. The fact that Florence takes up most of the poster reinforces how import her image is to both the band and the indie scene as a whole. The background features elements of nature, such as; flowers, leaves and birds, which have been utilized in order to represent the indie genre. From other research, we have discovered that a common feature of products from the indie genre is nature. Often backgrounds containing greenery etc. are used to reinforce the identity of indie bands being 'free' and 'at one with nature' . This background is appropriate for this particular band as they often set their videos outside, to reinforce their carefree attitude. Florence is seen wearing a string vest, with sections of her flesh showing. Due to her minimal clothing, she is again seen as being at one with nature and free from the bounds society holds on her. Additionally, there are also plastic lungs attached to her neck by string, which not only relate to the title of the album, but also represent the ability to breath and be 'free'. All of these factors help to generate an awareness of what the album is going to hold. From the poster, we expect the album to contain unique tracks that will engage audiences, and take them out of their everyday lives into a supernatural, magical world that Florence and the machine have created.
Copy
The title of the band is positioned at the top of the poster, in a swirly loose font. This is used to demonstrate the relaxed nature of not only the band, but their music also. It also relates to the theme of nature due it being loose and calm. This font is actually only used to focus on the name of the band, making it stand out from the other text featured on the poster. An uppercase, simple font has been used for the other text, enabling it to still be visible to the viewer, however, is not as powerful as the name of the band. The name of the album 'lungs' is featured underneath the image of Florence, in a larger font due to its importance but also, to make the theme of freedom apparent to the audience. Other information such as the release date etc, are in a smaller font positioned towards the bottom of the poster. Overall, all of the text is placed in a white font for two main reasons. Firstly, it stands out against the black background used for the rest of the poster, making the text easy to read to the audience. Secondly, the colour white could be seen as connoting themes of purity, peace and relaxed moods.
Genre
Firstly, the colour black relates to the 'indie genre'. Other products we have analysed from this genre tend to primarily use fairly dark colours, with either white or grey text. Additionally, as mentioned previously, the background including images of nature reinforces the freedom associated with the indie lifestyle. Overall, the poster looks fairly antique and rough, representing the typical ideology of indie rock bands and the way in which they live. This is heightened through Florence's costume and body language- her clothing is minimal, her hair looks fairly scruffy and she appears as fairly relaxed to the audience, connoting that she is content with her life. However, the fact that a female member of an indie band is present, let alone on the front of the poster, does challenge typical conventions of the indie genre. This makes the band even more engaging for an audience.

Connotation
The relaxed nature of Florence, alongside the images associated with nature connote that the album contains tracks that will make the audience feel exhilarated, relaxed and at one with nature. Overall, the whole poster connotes friendliness and openness, to suggest that the band are willing to share this enchanted world depicted on their album cover with their audience.

Target Audience
The target audience for Florence and the Machine is young adults and teenagers who enjoy the meaningful 'feel good' kind of music that the band produces.
Mode of Address
Overall, the advert appears to be very inviting for the audience as it creates a relaxed, pure mood. This is generated through ;the plain colours used, Florence's laid back body language, and the glimmers of nature apparent in the image. The fact that the image is the center piece of the poster, and is also large signifies that the band are reaching out to their audience, wanting them to engage with both Florence and what the band stands for. The bands almost 'supernatural' outlook on life is imposed on the audience through the images on the poster.
Tag-line/ Title
The poster does not feature a Tag-line. I Imagine this is due to the amount of text already featured on the poster. A tag-line would probably make the poster look a bit clustered and take the attention away from the text that is of importance to the audience, such as the name of the band etc. It seems the band have chosen to only feature text of high importance to the release of their album. I think this is a good decision, as an audience would probably get put off if there was a huge amount of text on the poster. Going forward, I would probably suggest that our poster should only include important information and primarily be focused on the image we choose to use.

2. Jamie T
Chaka Demus EP
Image
The poster features a black and white image of Jamie T, looking down at his audience, on the top of what appears to be a staircase. There is another person in the frame, however, it is clear that he is not of any relevance as his face is unrecognizable and his character isn't as large as Jamie T. Jamie T's costume is also of importance as he is wearing a cap and undone shirt, representing typical attire associated with artists from the indie genre. It's clear that the image is taken outside, due to the trees shown in the background. In contrast to this, is the top section of the poster, highlighted with a yellow background alongside red and black font. These colours represent the fun, adventurous, side of this artist.
