Findings

What is your age?

Most of the people we asked to fill out our questionnaire were between the ages of 16-18, therefore, this is the age we will base our target audience on. Essentially, this means that we are including the conventions they expect/prefer to see in an indie music video which makes it more appealing for them.

What is your gender?

The questionnaire was mainly completed by females, however, we are still going to aim our music video at both a male and female audience as the indie genre is enjoyed by both genders. Also, if we target it at females, we are narrowing down the audience for our video, making it less successful.

How often do you listen to music?

Most people listen to their music daily, therefore, we want to make our music video quite exciting and unique so that it catches their attention and allows them to listen to something different every day. We also have to bare in mind how competitive the music industry is, our video is competing with a range of videos from the indie genre, therefore, ensuring it appeals to our audience is essential.

How do you get your music?

The majority of participants downloaded their music illegally. Illegal downloading is a serious issue in the music industry, even though our questionnaire illustrates that it's a popular choice, we will try to prevent the bands music being available for illegal download.

How do you listen to your music? (May tick more than one)

As expected, we found that most individuals listened to their music via MP3/iPod. This seems appropriate due to the ever growing technology now available for audiences. We are going to make our audience aware that they are able to download the bands music electronically also.

What is your favourite sub genre of indie music?

Most of our audience members chose Indie Pop as their favourite sub genre. Despite this, Indie Rock was still quite popular, therefore we are going to go ahead with out initial choice

What is your favourite indie band/artist?

Most people favoured The Kings of Leon, closely followed by Florence and The Machine. In order for our products to be successful, we should look closely at these bands and incorporate their style into our products.

Do you prefer indie bands to consist of male or female members?

The majority of participants preferred indie bands to consist of male members. As a result of this, we are going to include all male members in order to make our music video appeal to our audience. It seems clear that they will be more interested in a male band and therefore will be more likely to enjoy the video.

Do you expect the style of clothing to be...? (May tick more than one)

Indie style clothing was the most popular choice of clothing among our audience. Using this clothing will reinforce the genre of our band , allowing their personalities to be demonstrated, aswell as making them recognizable to an audience. It is this feature that will create an identity for them also.

Does watching indie music videos influence your style of clothing?

It is clear that indie videos don't really affect the way in which individuals dress. This however, doesn't necessarily effect our decision making. We still plan on utilizing costumes associated with the indie genre to ensure our video is fitting in with the typical conventions of the genre, aswell as making it as realistic as possible.

Would you associate dark colours with the indie genre?

Our audience doesn't necessarily associate dark colours with the indie genre. This finding coincides with our research into indie products. We often found that bright settings and colours were used in order to demonstrate the bands relationship with nature. Bright colours also reinforce the bands youth and quirkiness. As a group, we find it essential to incorporate bright colours into our video in order to create a true representation of the bands identity.

Do you like music videos to show just the band or the band along with a story edited between?

This finding fits in with the research we have completed. All of the indie videos incorporated both a story and the band. Therefore, we are going to utilize both a story and the band to appeal to our audience and make our video fit in with the indie genre.

If there is a narrative/story, do you prefer to involve the lead singer/artist or new characters?

It seems that the most popular choice is to involve the band/artist in the narrative rather than including new characters. Therefore we will not introduce any new characters in the story. This finding fits in with the videos we researched, suggesting that the genre is primarily focused on the band and their members. This could be used in order to shape the bands identity, and allow the audience to get to know them a bit better.

In the music video, do you prefer to see the band or setting first?

Indie music videos tend to place heavy focus upon the band ,therefore, it's not suprising that the audience would prefer to see the band first. We are planning to introduce our band at the start also so they are recognizable to the audience

What stock settings would you expect to see within and indie music video? (May tick more than one)

Overall, city streets, open spaces and studios appear to be the most recognisable settings from indie videos. Similarly we also found these settings were used in videos from our research. In order to replicate the indie genre as much as possible we will include these settings throughout our video.

Do you own many CD’s?

Most of the participants stated that they didn't own many CD's. Suggesting that they downloaded their music online or from other sources. However, there was still a large amount who did own many CD's. These findings have influenced our decision to make it aware on our products that the bands music are available on iTunes, as well as on CDs.

When buying CD’s, does the cover attract you?

The front cover of a CD contributes to our audience's decision to purchase it. With this knowledge, we are going to ensure our front cover appeals to our audience as much as possible. We will do this through using the band on the front cover, alongside font and colours that will stand out ,making it unique and attractive.

What attracts you most to the CD? (May tick more than one)

The most attractive feature for our audience is the picture of the band used. This fits in with our research- most of the digi-packs featured the band on the front cover. This has influenced our decision to use an image of the band on our front cover also. There were also other popular factors that attracted our audience. For example, the band name and the front cover of the digi-pack. This means that when planning the bands name we should consider our audience and whether it would appeal to them. We also need to ensure our front cover is relevant and includes typical conventions we have noticed from other indie digipacks.

Do you prefer the cover to create an enigma or not?

Our audience mainly stated that they would prefer the cover to create an enigma. Therefore, on our front cover we are intending to include as little information as possible. Additionally, adding to the enigma, we are going to use a fairly plain image of the band in order to keep the digipack plain and add to the mystery.

Overall, the audience questionnaire has provided us with a greater understanding of what is expected from our audience. Through previous research we already had a conception of what we needed to incorporate into our products, however, the questionnaire enabled us to target the specific expectations and preferences from our audience. The findings have aided us in shaping our products and ensuring they relate to both the indie genre and our audience. We have not ignored other examples that scored highly in our audience questionnaire as our audience appeal can be maximised by taking into account various popular responses. This is because they may complement each other to create a stronger final impact. Overall this fits more neatly with our Audience Profile that brings all our results together. The questionnaire has helped us to make the following decisions:

  • We are going to ensure that our chosen track ,band and music video are unique and exciting. Most of our audience listened to their music daily, therefore, we need to ensure that they will enjoy listening and viewing our products. Also, our band has to compete against many others in the industry, meaning that it has to hold something fresh and exciting to engage our audience.
  • We are going to ensure that it's made apparent on our products that our track is available for download on iTunes. Most of our audience download their music online, therefore it's essential for our track to be available for download also.
  • All of our band members are going to be male in order to increase audience engagement. A very small amount of our audience preferred the band to consist of female members.
  • Our members are going to be wearing typical indie costumes in order to reflect the genre
  • Despite our audience preferring the use of dark colours in the video, we have chosen to use bright colours relating to our previous research from indie rock videos
  • We are going to incorporate both a narrative alongside clips of the band performing
  • Our band will be introduced at the start of the video
  • The most popular choice of setting was any open space, however, we are also going to  include city streets and studios as they were popular choices also
  • We need to make it aware on our products that the track is available for download
  • The front cover of our digipack is going to fit specifically to our audience to engage them and make them interested in purchasing the CD
  • Ensure that we pay close attention to the picture of the band, title and front cover of the band as these were the most attractive features
  • Try and create an enigma by not including much information on the digipack

We incorporated our findings from our research into a short documentary featuring the typical codes and conventions found from the indie genre, the features we have decided to utilise into our project and information on how the genre originated and how it has progressed over time. The documentary is displayed below:

In addition, we also produced a booklet about the indie-rock genre. Using our research, we have been able to include highly detailed information about the genre as a whole. Also, the booklet includes theories that can be related to the genre.
